Where is Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki?
Aruna Shanbhag is a nurse from Haldipur, Karnataka in India. In 1973, while working at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, she was sexually assaulted by Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki, a ward boy at the hospital. Sohanlal was motivated partly by resentment for being ordered about and castigated by Aruna.
On the fateful night of 27 November 1973, he attacked her while she was changing clothes in the hospital basement. He choked her with a dog chain and sodomized her. The asphyxiation cut off oxygen supply to her brain resulting in brain stem contusion injury and cervical cord injury apart from leaving her cortically blind.
The police case was registered as a case of robbery and attempted murder on account of the concealment of anal rape by the doctors, under the instructions of the Dean of KEM, the late Dr. Deshpande perhaps, to avoid the social rejection of the victim. Sohanlal was caught and convicted, and he served a 7 yr concurrent sentence for assault and robbery. Not for rape or sexual molestation, nor for the "unnatural sexual offence" (which could have got him a 10 yr sentence by itself).
Since the assault, she has been in a vegetative state. On 24th January 2011, the Supreme Court of India responded to the plea for Euthanasia filed by Aruna's friend journalist Pinki Virani, by setting up a medical panel to examine her. However, it turned down the mercy killing petition on 07th March, 2011. The court, in its landmark judgement, however allowed Passive Euthanasia.
The attacker strangled Aruna and damaged her neck so badly she became a vegetable for the rest of her life; yet, our system could not convict him of attempted murder. Once Dr. Deshpande decided to conceal the fact of anal rape out of his twisted sense of preventing 'social rejection' for the victim and her fiance, there was no going back. The case of robbery was proved - the attacker stole a necklace and a few rupees from Aruna. But both charges - attempt to murder and robbery - got him only 7 years. If this is not a travesty of justice, I don't know what is. Barring a complete overhaul of our justice system, this is likely to continue.

From a Sleepy Head
I know what will everybody suggest, that i shud try to avoid such thoughts from coming to my mind by diverting it to better things like reading, listening to music, watching tv etc...well, looks like i have done it all without much respite. Like yesterday, i slept after 1.30 a.m, that's better than Sunday though when i slept at 3 a.m!! I am feeling so sleepy and heady at the moment that i cud fall asleep just about anywhere, doesn't help my case since i am at work and i just cannot afford to fall asleep! I can't seem to find a remedy to this problem, except for waiting for my parents to come back, which is not going to happen before Monday. :( Sigh, so i have 5 more days to go.
Right now i am waiting for the weekend like never before to catch up on some sleep. Let me go and grab some coffee, at least that will help me stay awake. Anyways, all of u have a great week ahead.

How you Doin?

This last week was nothing short of terrible, it had only been a couple of days since dad had recovered from typhoid and i was bitten by a silly mosquito which lead me to the dreadful malaria. What followed was 104 degrees of temperature for 5 days coupled with lots of weakness & an awful appetite. Let's just say that i hated to eat anything in this past one week! Mom had a tough time dealing with me, and it felt as if i had gone back to childhood. Her daily activities included goading me to eat on time, reminding me to take my medicines on time and staying awake through nights coz of the high temperature.
Anyways, it feels wonderful to be back to my own self again! Although i am still weak and on the slow road to recovery, it feels good to know that at least the malaria is gone. This illness has also made me realize how badly am i going to miss my mom once i get married. I so don't want to get married, not for at least the next couple of years! :|
Tell you guys plz take care of yourselves and do whatever it takes to stay away from mosquitoes! Stay safe & stay healthy.

Down in dumps :(
Feeling so bad to have not updated my blog since such a long time....Haven't been to work since the past 3 days, reason being malaria. Have been stuck with it since Saturday night, on the road to slow recovery now. The medicines are so strong that they make me feel hollow from within, food tastes so bland that most of the times i feel like throwing up.
Have never felt so weak & dull. Mornings are fine, and fever starts to creep in once evening's here. So the only respite is facebook in the mornings, coz the rest of the time is spent resting. In fact i am bored of resting too, but can't do much about it. Doctor's asked me to take rest for at least a week.

Entertaining Thyself!
Your Brain is Vivid |
Your mind is a creative hotbed of artistic talent. You're always making pictures in your mind, especially when you're bored. You are easily inspired to think colorful, interesting thoughts. And although it may be hard to express these thoughts, it won't always be. |
You Are Wine |
You are very naturally sexy and inviting. You don't have to try too hard. The longer people spend time with you, the more drawn in they become. You believe that seduction shouldn't be rushed, you like to savor every moment. Going too fast kills the excitement. You like to indulge all of your senses. |

Blank for the Moment
Today morning mom got a call from my uncle confirming that granny has been admitted to the ICU early morning coz she fainted after getting epileptic fits. As of now we have no clue as to why this happened, but tests are being conducted on her. And things will get clear only after the reports are out. As of now we are praying for her well being.
"I hope god is listening!"

Epidemic Alert
HONG KONG (Reuters) - Across Asia, people are closely following the global spread of swine flu from Mexico and preparing for the worst after the World Health Organization raised its alert level for the outbreak. Authorities in the region have boosted surveillance at airports and hospitals, stockpiled anti-viral drugs and other supplies to fight any outbreaks.
Face masks and anti-viral drugs like Relenza and Tamiflu flew off the shelves from pharmacies in some cities on Tuesday.
"It's really apparent, people have been buying face masks all day," said Cyrus Chan, the boss of a dispensary in Hong Kong's Wanchai bar district who had sold out his entire stock of 10,000 adult face-masks and only had child sizes left.
"Since SARS, this is the second time there's been such a great demand," Chan added, as a steady stream of customers asking for masks were told there wouldn't be any new stocks of adult masks till later.Still, the mood on the streets appeared largely calm, with the world's most populous region, used to outbreaks of SARS and the H5N1 avian flu, not having yet reported any confirmed cases. In South Korea, health authorities are testing a 51-year-old woman for suspected swine flu after a trip to Mexico.
"There hasn't been much of a reaction yet. I've just had a few calls asking if we have anti-viral drugs or special masks" said a pharmacist in downtown Seoul who asked not to be named.
"I guess South Koreans have grown accustomed to these breakouts over the past 10 years. But I will be bringing in more Tamiflu to the shelves."
PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE
Asia's patchy medical infrastructure, poverty and vast populations in countries like China and India make it particularly vulnerable should the virus take hold and propagate.
China has vowed to disclose any human cases of swine fever promptly, while state-run newspapers on Tuesday urged officials to be open and avoid the kind of cover-ups that brought panic during the SARS epidemic.
The empty streets, schools and shops, worried citizens wearing masks and fleeing travelers now seen in Mexico are familiar to China, where in 2003 the SARS virus shut down much of the country, killing hundreds in the mainland and Hong Kong. In Singapore, stocks of high-end N95 masks were being depleted in stores, with a sales attendant at Changi Airport saying new stocks wouldn't arrive till next week at the earliest.
"We've run out of the masks as people going to Europe or the U.S. are trying to resort to some protection from the flu."
New Zealand meanwhile has quarantined 10 people including a teacher and nine children from an Auckland school and treated them as likely swine flu victims.
While the local community was initially stunned, the overall public mood has reportedly been mostly calm, with the cases appearing to be mild so far. A further 56 people are being monitored. In neighboring Australia, five suspected flu cases are also being monitored. In Vietnam, there appeared to be a degree of confusion toward swine flu which is not in fact linked to pigs alone -- but an assortment of swine, human and avian viruses.
The swine flu outbreak has killed up to 149 people in Mexico and world health experts moved closer to declaring it the first flu pandemic in 40 years. The last such outbreak, a "Hong Kong" flu pandemic first detected in the former British colony in 1968, killed about one million people, while SARS in 2003 killed 299.
"SARS was like a rehearsal for us," said Wong Pak-keung, a taxi driver who recalled those dark days when streets emptied and few of the city's 7 million people left home without a face mask.
"After SARS, people are more prepared and know what to do."
I hope we are prepared for it too!! All of you please take care and take whatever precautions that may be required.
