Fairytale Gone Wrong

Boy meets girl through mutual friends. Falls in love with her, they go out on their first date to watch Lion King. Boy proposes girl at Ritz Hotel with a 25,000 diamond ring. They get married in a lavish ceremony and live happily ever after. Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Well, not every fairy tale has a happy ending...and this one in particular didn't quite end the way it was meant to be.

This is the story of Anni Dewani, a 28 yr old Swedish-born Indian woman, who was kidnapped and murdered during her honeymoon in South Africa, whilst taking a trip with her husband Shrien Dewani through Gugulethu township near Cape Town on 13 November 2010. This may sound like a usual case of kidnapping & robbery, given the fact that South Africa is infamous for such cases.

But this was a plan hatched by her husband, who wanted to get rid of her. The driver of the cab later admitted that he had been paid 15000 rand by Shrien to murder his wife. And now there are alleged reports of Mr. Shrien Dewani being a gay! For heaven's sake why on earth did he have to marry this girl if he was not interested in the first place? And what did he get by getting her killed?

He still claims that he is innocent and that he had nothing to do with his wife's murder. Such cases just leave me without words, full of anger and disgust. The timeline & other details of the case can be found here:

Where is Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki?

I know a lot of people must be wondering at the title of this post, who the hell is Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki? To cut the long story short and/or to refresh the memory of the people who might have read about this case:

Aruna Shanbhag is a nurse from Haldipur, Karnataka in India. In 1973, while working at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, she was sexually assaulted by Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki, a ward boy at the hospital. Sohanlal was motivated partly by resentment for being ordered about and castigated by Aruna.

On the fateful night of 27 November 1973, he attacked her while she was changing clothes in the hospital basement. He choked her with a dog chain and sodomized her. The asphyxiation cut off oxygen supply to her brain resulting in brain stem contusion injury and cervical cord injury apart from leaving her cortically blind.

The police case was registered as a case of robbery and attempted murder on account of the concealment of anal rape by the doctors, under the instructions of the Dean of KEM, the late Dr. Deshpande perhaps, to avoid the social rejection of the victim. Sohanlal was caught and convicted, and he served a 7 yr concurrent sentence for assault and robbery. Not for rape or sexual molestation, nor for the "unnatural sexual offence" (which could have got him a 10 yr sentence by itself).

Since the assault, she has been in a vegetative state. On 24th January 2011, the Supreme Court of India responded to the plea for Euthanasia filed by Aruna's friend journalist Pinki Virani, by setting up a medical panel to examine her. However, it turned down the mercy killing petition on 07th March, 2011. The court, in its landmark judgement, however allowed Passive Euthanasia.

However, this is not what i was looking for! I wanted to know about the man who did this. I wanted to find out where is he and what is he doing on today's date? I searched the internet (google) to find out what i had pretty much expected (but still left me disgusted). First of all, all that i found on the first few pages of google were articles on Aruna Shanbaug, what happened to her and blah!

But, what amazed me was the skewed mind set of the media who happened to highlight only Aruna's plight without ever wanting to know or investigate as to where did the man who did this go? I searched a bit more and this is what i found:

Now, what i read was not the same old article on Aruna's plight or the debate on her mercy killing petition. I read the comments section and i feel that this one comment from a gentleman in US summed up exactly what i was looking for and he couldn't have put what i had to say in better words, here it is:

If you look up Wikipedia, you should find a summary of Aruna Shanbaug's case. The examining doctors as directed by the hospital chief Dr Deshpande did not mention in their report that the victim was raped anally and bled for days, to save her fiance and his family from social rejection and ostracization, in case Aruna recovered!! This omission frustrated the police and prosecution greatly, because they could not charge the accused with the serious crime of rape, but only with the lesser crime of assault. With the assault and rape charge the accused (Sohanlal Walmiki) could have been sentenced up to life in prison. With the assault & robbery charge he served only 7 years and got out, and reportedly got another hospital job in New Delhi! Such is the twisted, bizarre & convoluted status of society and justice in India.

The attacker strangled Aruna and damaged her neck so badly she became a vegetable for the rest of her life; yet, our system could not convict him of attempted murder. Once  Dr. Deshpande decided to conceal the fact of anal rape out of his twisted sense of preventing 'social rejection' for the victim and her fiance, there was no going back. The case of robbery was proved - the attacker stole a necklace and a few rupees from Aruna. But both charges - attempt to murder and robbery - got him only 7 years. If this is not a travesty of justice, I don't know what is. Barring a complete overhaul of our justice system, this is likely to continue.

I don't know what more to say, I don't wish to discuss whether Aruna's life should be ended or not bcoz frankly speaking i don't think i have the right to do so! So, should i really wish everybody a typical and customary "Happy Women's Day"....i won't coz i don't feel like.

From a Sleepy Head

The pic above totally justifies my state at the moment. What's so good about mornings when u haven't slept well in the last 3 days! :-| And i don't have anyone to blame but myself. I haven't been able to sleep well since Sunday night, reason being totally psychological, i am living in an empty house. :( I just can't stay alone and this has been a problem with me since childhood. I need to have somebody around at any point of time. The moment i realise that i am alone i start getting disturbing thoughts in mind; ghosts, rape, murder....u name it and its all there. My mind is in such an alert state that it becomes extremely difficult for me to shut my mind up for me to fall asleep!

I know what will everybody suggest, that i shud try to avoid such thoughts from coming to my mind by diverting it to better things like reading, listening to music, watching tv etc...well, looks like i have done it all without much respite. Like yesterday, i slept after 1.30 a.m, that's better than Sunday though when i slept at 3 a.m!! I am feeling so sleepy and heady at the moment that i cud fall asleep just about anywhere, doesn't help my case since i am at work and i just cannot afford to fall asleep! I can't seem to find a remedy to this problem, except for waiting for my parents to come back, which is not going to happen before Monday. :( Sigh, so i have 5 more days to go.

Right now i am waiting for the weekend like never before to catch up on some sleep. Let me go and grab some coffee, at least that will help me stay awake. Anyways, all of u have a great week ahead.

How you Doin?

This last week was nothing short of terrible, it had only been a couple of days since dad had recovered from typhoid and i was bitten by a silly mosquito which lead me to the dreadful malaria. What followed was 104 degrees of temperature for 5 days coupled with lots of weakness & an awful appetite. Let's just say that i hated to eat anything in this past one week! Mom had a tough time dealing with me, and it felt as if i had gone back to childhood. Her daily activities included goading me to eat on time, reminding me to take my medicines on time and staying awake through nights coz of the high temperature.

Anyways, it feels wonderful to be back to my own self again! Although i am still weak and on the slow road to recovery, it feels good to know that at least the malaria is gone. This illness has also made me realize how badly am i going to miss my mom once i get married. I so don't want to get married, not for at least the next couple of years! :|

Tell you guys plz take care of yourselves and do whatever it takes to stay away from mosquitoes! Stay safe & stay healthy.

P.S. A special thanks to all my wonderful friends who kept checking about my health every now and then. Love you guys to bits!! Also, needless to say my sweetheart who made it a point to call me twice everyday on skype to check on my health, I Love U Baby, YOU r simply the best!!

Down in dumps :(

Feeling so bad to have not updated my blog since such a long time....Haven't been to work since the past 3 days, reason being malaria. Have been stuck with it since Saturday night, on the road to slow recovery now. The medicines are so strong that they make me feel hollow from within, food tastes so bland that most of the times i feel like throwing up.

Have never felt so weak & dull. Mornings are fine, and fever starts to creep in once evening's here. So the only respite is facebook in the mornings, coz the rest of the time is spent resting. In fact i am bored of resting too, but can't do much about it. Doctor's asked me to take rest for at least a week.

Let's hope i get well soon, resume office and blogging like earlier. Till then adios guys!!

Rants Special

I am stressed, i am stressed! Oh did i say i am STRESSED!! Yeah, this past one week has been crazy....so much so that i had my lunch at 5.30 p.m yesterday. What followed next was acidity and head ache in the evening. Well the worst part is that i don't know how long is this going to continue....as one of my colleagues is on a long leave which ends at the end of this month, and other colleague of mine has some serious health concerns, so dunno how long is he not gonna be around too!

So that leaves me and my colleague to take care of 2 desks each!! Wow, how optimistic does that sound now....besides the colleague who is handling the desks with me right now is to go on leave from the 1st week of June. So that's enuff to put me in a tizzy and this leaves me wondering, "When the HELL will i get to take an off!?" I am in dire need of a vacation....and i desperately look forward to weekends these days....that's the only respite i get from this helluva job! Anyways, hope all of you have a gr8 weekend. Will be watching Kites on Sunday, hope it turns out to be good.

How Corrupt Are We?

Found this article on yahoo and felt like sharing it. Doesn't make me feel any good or proud for that matter, its sad to see where we stand. The reason as to why the earthquake in Haiti was so devastating has also been given:

http://in.news.yahoo.com/240/20100218/1301/twl-7365113.html

Do let me know your views on what you just read. Also, the 33% reservation for women bill has finally been passed by the Rajya Sabha. What are your views on it?

Entertaining Thyself!

Your Brain is Vivid

Your mind is a creative hotbed of artistic talent.

You're always making pictures in your mind, especially when you're bored.

You are easily inspired to think colorful, interesting thoughts.

And although it may be hard to express these thoughts, it won't always be.

You Are Wine

You are very naturally sexy and inviting. You don't have to try too hard.

The longer people spend time with you, the more drawn in they become.

You believe that seduction shouldn't be rushed, you like to savor every moment.

Going too fast kills the excitement. You like to indulge all of your senses.

The reason for the title of this post is, i am down with fever! And i have been asked to take rest. So instead of pouting and sulking i am thinking of different ways to keep myself distracted and entertained.

Blank for the Moment

Yesterday was so good, mom came back home after three weeks!! This is the longest that she stayed away from her family. But we didn't mind coz it was for granny (i had mentioned before about her hip bone fracture) and she was needed there. Just when we were beginning to believe that everything's gonna be alright, things have taken a bad turn.

Today morning mom got a call from my uncle confirming that granny has been admitted to the ICU early morning coz she fainted after getting epileptic fits. As of now we have no clue as to why this happened, but tests are being conducted on her. And things will get clear only after the reports are out. As of now we are praying for her well being.

"I hope god is listening!"

Epidemic Alert

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Across Asia, people are closely following the global spread of swine flu from Mexico and preparing for the worst after the World Health Organization raised its alert level for the outbreak. Authorities in the region have boosted surveillance at airports and hospitals, stockpiled anti-viral drugs and other supplies to fight any outbreaks.

Face masks and anti-viral drugs like Relenza and Tamiflu flew off the shelves from pharmacies in some cities on Tuesday.
"It's really apparent, people have been buying face masks all day," said Cyrus Chan, the boss of a dispensary in Hong Kong's Wanchai bar district who had sold out his entire stock of 10,000 adult face-masks and only had child sizes left.
"Since SARS, this is the second time there's been such a great demand," Chan added, as a steady stream of customers asking for masks were told there wouldn't be any new stocks of adult masks till later.Still, the mood on the streets appeared largely calm, with the world's most populous region, used to outbreaks of SARS and the H5N1 avian flu, not having yet reported any confirmed cases. In South Korea, health authorities are testing a 51-year-old woman for suspected swine flu after a trip to Mexico.

"There hasn't been much of a reaction yet. I've just had a few calls asking if we have anti-viral drugs or special masks" said a pharmacist in downtown Seoul who asked not to be named.
"I guess South Koreans have grown accustomed to these breakouts over the past 10 years. But I will be bringing in more Tamiflu to the shelves."

PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE
Asia's patchy medical infrastructure, poverty and vast populations in countries like China and India make it particularly vulnerable should the virus take hold and propagate.
China has vowed to disclose any human cases of swine fever promptly, while state-run newspapers on Tuesday urged officials to be open and avoid the kind of cover-ups that brought panic during the SARS epidemic.

The empty streets, schools and shops, worried citizens wearing masks and fleeing travelers now seen in Mexico are familiar to China, where in 2003 the SARS virus shut down much of the country, killing hundreds in the mainland and Hong Kong. In Singapore, stocks of high-end N95 masks were being depleted in stores, with a sales attendant at Changi Airport saying new stocks wouldn't arrive till next week at the earliest.
"We've run out of the masks as people going to Europe or the U.S. are trying to resort to some protection from the flu."

New Zealand meanwhile has quarantined 10 people including a teacher and nine children from an Auckland school and treated them as likely swine flu victims.
While the local community was initially stunned, the overall public mood has reportedly been mostly calm, with the cases appearing to be mild so far. A further 56 people are being monitored. In neighboring Australia, five suspected flu cases are also being monitored. In Vietnam, there appeared to be a degree of confusion toward swine flu which is not in fact linked to pigs alone -- but an assortment of swine, human and avian viruses.

The swine flu outbreak has killed up to 149 people in Mexico and world health experts moved closer to declaring it the first flu pandemic in 40 years. The last such outbreak, a "Hong Kong" flu pandemic first detected in the former British colony in 1968, killed about one million people, while SARS in 2003 killed 299.
"SARS was like a rehearsal for us," said Wong Pak-keung, a taxi driver who recalled those dark days when streets emptied and few of the city's 7 million people left home without a face mask.
"After SARS, people are more prepared and know what to do."

I hope we are prepared for it too!! All of you please take care and take whatever precautions that may be required.
